Abalone is a two-player abstract strategy game played on a hexagonal board with black and white marbles.
Objective
The first player to push six of their opponent's marbles off the board wins.
Setup
- Pieces: Each player starts with 14 marbles of their color (typically black and white).
- Layout: Marbles are arranged in three rows on opposite sides of the board in a 5-6-3 formation.
- Starting: Black always moves first.
How to Move
On your turn, you can move a single marble or a straight line of up to three marbles one space in any of the six directions.
- In-line move: Marbles move forward or backward along their own line.
- Broadside (Side-step) move: Marbles move sideways, remaining parallel to their original positions.
Pushing (Sumito)
You can push an opponent's marbles (called a Sumito) only with an in-line move when you have a numerical
advantage:
- 3 marbles can push 1 or 2 opponent marbles.
- 2 marbles can push 1 opponent marble.
- Constraints:
- You cannot push an equal or greater number of marbles (e.g., 2 cannot push 2).
- An opponent's line of 3 marbles can never be pushed.
- There must be an empty space (or the edge of the board) behind the opponent's marbles to push them.
Basic Strategy
- Control the center: Marbles in the center are harder to push off and have more movement options.
- Stay grouped: Keeping your marbles in a tight cluster (like a hexagon or diamond) makes them harder for your opponent to isolate and push.
- Avoid the edges: Moving to the edge early makes you vulnerable to being pushed off.
